The Kansas City Chiefs haven’t won a Super Bowl in 50 years. Here is why they will on Feb. 2 over the San Francisco 49ers in Super Bowl LIV from Miami. Being as we are impartial here at Sports Interaction, also check out our look at why to bet the 49ers in Super Bowl LIV.
2020 Super Bowl Odds: Bet the Chiefs
Kansas City is the slight betting favourite for the 54th Super Bowl against the 49ers, and the favourite is 28-23-2 against the spread in the previous 53. The Chiefs were underdogs in Super Bowl I and lost 35-10 to the Green Bay Packers and underdogs in SB IV and beat the Minnesota Vikings 23-7. The favourite has won and covered two of the past three Super Bowls, although those were the New England Patriots both times.
One reason to like the Chiefs is that they beat the 49ers fairly soundly in Kansas City in Week 3 of the 2018 regular season by a score of 38-27. That was only the fourth NFL regular-season start for Chiefs quarterback Patrick Mahomes and he was brilliant in throwing for 314 yards and three scores without a turnover. Are both teams a bit different from then? Sure, but a lot of key guys remain on both sides.
Really, it’s Mahomes as to why the Chiefs are the smart bet because he simply has no peer in the NFL – and might go down as the greatest of all-time. Obviously too early to say that kind of thing considering Mahomes just completed his second full season, but the 2018 NFL MVP is doing things no other quarterback his age has done. For example, Mahomes’ 142 passing attempts without an interception are the most to begin a playoff career since that data has been tracked since 1991. It’s why Mahomes is the clear-cut Sports Interaction favourite to win Super Bowl MVP at +100. He is given an over/under of 0.5 interceptions in this game, with the under a -150 favourite.

He can run, too, leading the Chiefs with 53 yards rushing in both playoff games this year. He is the fourth quarterback in NFL history with 50 rushing yards in consecutive playoff games in a single post-season. Kansas City is 4-0 all-time when he leads the team in rushing. Kansas City also clearly has the vastly superior offence in this game behind Mahomes. Travis Kelce is the best receiving tight end in football – sorry, George Kittle of the 49ers. Kelce has four straight seasons of at least 80 catches and 1,000 yards. In addition, Mahomes has an incredible group of lightning-fast, game-breaking wide receivers led by Tyreek Hill.
Kansas City Chiefs Super Bowl Odds
While the 49ers have lost twice in their past eight games overall, the Chiefs are on an eight-game winning streak with an average margin of victory at 16.1 points per. They also have covered seven straight as a betting favourite. On the flip side, San Francisco has lost its past seven playoff games away from home and covered in just one.
