The 49ers are the only team in the NL West with a loss and has lost several starters to injury, while the Giants will need to find a way to make up for the loss of Saquon Barkley. The sensational running back suffered a torn ACL in last week’s defeat and will miss the remainder of the season.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The 49ers are caught between magic numbers at -4.5, the byproduct of several expected Week 3 absences – including starting quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo, running back Raheem Mostert and standout defensive lineman Nick Bosa. The 49ers have gone a healthy 4-1 ATS in their last five games as a favourite while the Giants are a dreadful 1-7 against the spread in their last eight September home games. 75 percent of Sports Interaction bettors are on the 49ers.

The total for Sunday’s encounter is set at a super-low 41.5, with Sports Interaction respondents split right down the middle. New York has gone below the number in their previous six home games in September, with three of those outings coming in under 40 total points. And San Francisco also has a solid Under trend working in its favour, with five of its previous seven games on the East Coast coming in below the number.

San Francisco 49ers

Being down a starting QB, a No. 1 RB and possibly a star TE (George Kittle is questionable) is not ideal, but losing Bosa might hurt this team the most. The team’s defensive lynchpin was carted off the field in last weekend’s 31-13 win over the Jets, and the team confirmed his torn ACL the following day. The 49ers defence will need to step up in his absence, particularly if Garoppolo sits out and Nick Mullens takes over under center.

New York Giants

The Giants are also hurting on offence, most significantly due to the loss of Barkley. His season-ending injury resulted in New York signing free-agent running back Devonta Freeman to a one-year contract earlier in the week; it’s unclear how Freeman will factor into the offence this weekend, but he’ll likely share work with Wayne Gallman and Dion Lewis. Wide receiver Sterling Shepard is also out, having been placed on the IR earlier this week with turf toe.
