With the regular season getting underway in less than two weeks, the San Francisco 49ers would love nothing more than to see something – anything – positive from their starting quarterback. Jimmy Garoppolo will look to put last week’s dreadful effort behind him as he leads the 49ers into Kansas City for a Week 3 pre-season encounter with the Chiefs. It was at Arrowhead Stadium last September where Garoppolo suffered a season-ending torn ACL.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Chiefs are comfortably favoured in this one, which should come as no surprise given that both teams will likely play the majority of their starters for the entire first half – and the Chiefs’ star players are better than those on the 49ers. Kansas City comes in having gone 9-6-1 ATS in its previous 14 pre-season games dating back to 2015, while San Francisco has covered its first two exhibition games this year after going 0-3-1 ATS in the 2018 pre-season.

The total for this one opened at 43, but has climbed all the way to 45 – again, not all that surprising when you consider just how prolific the Chiefs are expected to be. The 49ers enter the weekend having converted the under in five of their previous seven exhibition games following a four-game consecutive over streak. The Chiefs have gone above the number in three of their past four exhibition outings since reeling off four straight unders.

San Francisco 49ers

Garoppolo can’t do much worse than he did last Monday night against the Denver Broncos, completing just one of his six passes for zero yards with one interception. Coupled with the five consecutive INTs he threw during a recent practice session, 49ers fans are wringing their hands going into Saturday night’s tilt. And Garoppolo will likely be without one of his top targets, with standout tight end George Kittle (calf) not expected to play.

Kansas City Chiefs

It’s standard protocol for Chiefs head coach Andy Reid to give his starters at least the entire first half in the third game of the pre-season, and that won’t change this year. All eyes will be on franchise QB Patrick Mahomes, who completed just 2-of-5 attempts for 11 yards last week but had 24 attempts in the third game of the 2018 exhibition season. Running back Damien Williams, wide receiver Tyreek Hill and tight end Travis Kelce should also see plenty of action.
