What once promised to be a showdown between two high-powered offences, now looks like it could be one of the more lopsided games on the Week 4 schedule.

Oddsmakers have Chargers as 10.5-point favourites in this game.

NFL Point Spread and Betting Analysis

These two franchises have met 14 times during the regular season, with both teams winning seven games. The last time these two team met (Dec. 20, 2014) was perhaps one of the better efforts by the Chargers in the last number of years. The team tied a franchise record for greatest comeback in team history, storming back against the 49ers for 21 second half points in a thrilling 38-35 overtime win. Quarterback Philip Rivers led that Chargers attack, and is a perfect 3-0 lifetime against San Francisco. In those three games he has a passer rating of 108.1, nine touchdowns, three interceptions, and 963 yards passing. The 49ers are 0-3 against the spread (ATS) this season, while the Chargers are 1-2 ATS.

San Francisco 49ers

The 49ers received the worst possible news this week (if not the year) when stud quarterback Jimmy Garoppolo left the game against the Chiefs. Later it was revealed that he has a torn ACL and will be out the remainder of the season. The Niners at 1-2 were already struggling with Jimmy G at the helm and now are pinning all hopes on back-up C.J. Beathard. Beathard is a former third round pick (2017) who has appeared in seven games (five starts), with a completion percentage of 54.9 percent, four touchdowns and six interceptions. If Beathard is successful Sunday he will have to rely on a couple of good offensive threats, and it starts with running back Matt Breida. Breida leads the NFL in rushing with 274 yards, and has been a complete monster the last couple of games rushing for 228 yards (in two games). He is tied for first with Cowboys starter Ezekiel Elliott. Breida will be a major factor in this game, check out his rushing props at Sportsinteraction.com before kick-off. Also tight end George Kittle has hauled in 12 receptions for 191 yards this season. He’s a quick outlet for the newly minted starter.

On defence, Fred Warner has 33 tackles – that leads the NFC, and he’s third overall in the NFL. Of note, Cornerback Richard Sherman is also expected to miss this game with a mild calf strain. The 49ers are hopeful he will return to the line-up within the next couple of weeks.

Los Angeles Chargers

Rivers has been on fire to start the 2018 season, completing 75-of-108 attempts for 906 yards, eight touchdowns, only one interception, and a passer rating of 115.7 percent. His number one target has been receiver Keenan Allen. Allen has picked up where he left off last season, catching 17 passes for 219 yards, while Mike Williams has been a great red zone threat catching three touchdowns in his last two games. The Chargers have maybe the best one-two punch along the ground with Melvin Gordon (316 total yards from scrimmage) and Austin Ekeler (295 total yards from scrimmage). Both of these guys can run, catch and score at will. The Chargers have the fourth-best total offence in the NFL, and could get better.
