The Los Angeles Lakers figure to return to the playoffs after several seasons without a postseason berth, and thanks to a couple of recent wins this week, they are tied with the Golden State Warriors in the loss column – both teams, the Lakers and Warriors, have nine losses entering play on Sunday in the NBA.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Lakers just defeated the Dallas Mavericks, 114-103, to get to 13-9 on the season. The Lakers are 9-13, however, against the spread. Los Angeles is beginning to figure out how to defend and find ways to minimize the damage opponents can do. This is the pathway to relevance in the NBA for the Lakers, a team whose offseason acquisitions were meant to strengthen their defence.

The Suns lost Friday night to the Orlando Magic, 99-85, failing to cover the spread. The Suns are 4-18 in the standings and 8-14 against the spread so far this season. The Suns scored just 14 points in the fourth quarter at home against an Orlando team which was working on a long road trip. The Magic should have been the team that got worn down and tired, but the Suns were that team instead, a sign of how young and unpolished they are.

Phoenix Suns

The Suns created two more shot attempts than Orlando on Friday, 84 to 82. The free throw disparity was not severe the other way, either: Orlando shot 18 foul shots to 14 for Phoenix. Both teams had relatively equal opportunities to score. The Suns just didn’t hit as many shots. They made 7 of 28 three-pointers, which wasted a good defensive performance in which they forced Orlando to make just 8 of 27 threes.

The Suns committed only 12 turnovers, which is something any NBA team will live with in a given game – that’s just three turnovers per quarter or one turnover every four minutes. It didn’t matter.

Orlando made 48 percent of its field goals. The Magic never had a bad quarter such as the 14-point fourth quarter which ruined the Suns’ chances. Phoenix had two starters who combined for only 11 points, Mikal Bridges and Elie Okobo. That was very hard to overcome, as it normally should be for any team. Getting balanced and consistent contributions has been elusive for the Suns. That’s why they are 4-18

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers still have a problem with fouling at times, but they are getting a lot better in terms of defending the three-point shot. Their win over Dallas involved a defensive performance in which they gave up only 103 points. That might not seem great, but it becomes great when one realizes that the Lakers still allow an average of over 111 points per game this season. They had been allowing close to 120 points per game in the first few weeks of the season but have begun to push down that number with improved play.

The big number for the Lakers against Dallas on Friday was that they held the Mavericks to 10 of 39 three-point shooting. Those 29 misses prevented the Mavs from doing what they wanted to achieve on offence. Los Angeles bottled up Dallas rookie sensation Luka Doncic, who was just 2 of 13 on the night and never found a rhythm. Being able to shut down Doncic was the reason the Lakers were able to prevail. LeBron James scored 28 points and got help from five teammates who scored in double figures. The Lakers can’t just be the LeBron show, and on Friday, they weren’t. This is how they need to move forward.
