The Raptors close a busy week Sunday with their first look of the season at the San Antonio Spurs and rookie sensation Victor Wembanyama in Alamo City. The NBA odds will partially depend on the injury status of another Spurs starter.

Raptors vs. Spurs NBA Betting Odds

About a third of the NBA was tanking after the All-Star Break in the 2022-23 regular season in an effort to finish with one of the three worst records in the league and an equal-best 14 per cent shot of winning the draft lottery and the chance to draft 7-foot-4 Frenchman Victor Wembanyama, considered the best overall prospect to enter the NBA since LeBron James, and LeBron turned out pretty good.

The Spurs won the lottery and Wembanyama really couldn’t have gone to a better spot than San Antonio with its Hall of Fame coach in Gregg Popovich and his history with former big men chosen No. 1 overall previously in David Robinson and Tim Duncan, both Hall of Famers. Plus, no big-market media pressure on Wemby. San Antonio is still likely a year from playoff contention but might have the best long-term asset in the sport.

Toronto won both meetings last year and has taken five in a row against San Antonio, which leads all-time 35-19 and 20-7 at home. The Spurs visit Scotiabank Arena on Feb. 12 close to the All-Star Break.

Toronto Raptors

Toronto failed in its bid for its first winning streak of the season on Thursday, losing 114-99 in Philadelphia in the second of a back-to-back to fall to 0-2 vs. the Sixers and former Toronto coach Nick Nurse this year. The offence blew up for a season-high 130 points just 24 hours earlier in a blowout win over Milwaukee. The Dinos actually outshot the Sixers and outscored them slightly from deep but were slaughtered on points in the paint, no real surprise with Joel Embiid in the middle for Philly. Scottie Barnes continued his torrid early season play with 24 points, eight rebounds and eight assists and directly created his team’s first 15 points. What the Raptors need is for Gary Trent Jr. to shake his slump and anchor a struggling second unit. Trent had eight points on 2-for-8 shooting Thursday and is averaging only 9.5 ppg on 32.3 per cent from the field. Raptors assistant coach Ivo Simović scouted internationally for the Spurs and was a part of the 2013 and 2014 summer league coaching staff.

San Antonio Spurs

Sometimes the NBA makes little sense. The Spurs lost by 40 at the Clippers on Sunday … and then followed with back-to-back stunning wins in Phoenix. On Thursday, Victor Wembanyama showed why he’s the most touted rookie in years with a career-high 38 points to go with 10 rebounds and two blocks. If Wemby becomes that guy on a full-time basis, and it’s not really fair to expect that as a rookie because he’s still going to be turnover- and foul-prone some nights, San Antonio will be adding titles to its current five over the next decade-plus. Starting guard Devin Vassell was limited to 17 minutes on Thursday due to groin tightness, so consider him questionable for Sunday. He’s second on the team in scoring at 19.4 ppg. The Spurs do have a Canadian in the system in former University of Alabama centre Charles Bediako, an undrafted free agent, but the Brampton native hasn’t played in the NBA yet and is in the G-League on a two-way contract. San Antonio’s first-ever game at the AT&T Center (now called Frost Bank Center) was against Toronto on Nov. 1, 2002.
