Can the shorthanded Philadelphia 76ers take advantage of a tired Toronto Raptors team that is playing the second half of a back-to-back?

It’s the second of a back-to-back for the Raptors on Thursday in Philadelphia, but the Dinos will catch at least one major break. The 76ers opened as 2-point favourites to win on the NBA odds, with a total of 213.

Raptors vs. 76ers NBA Betting Odds

Thursday is the first of four regular-season meetings between Toronto and Philadelphia. Last year, the 76ers won two of three but trail all-time at home 26-24.

Sixers superstar centre Joel Embiid averaged 24.0 points and 15.0 rebounds in the 2020-21 season series but the Raptors won’t have to worry about him Thursday. Tobias Harris averaged 20.7 points, 7.3 rebounds and 5.0 assists. The Dinos may or may not have to worry about him in this game. Ben Simmons put up 18.0 points, 10.3 rebounds and 6.3 assists. Simmons remains away from the team trying to force a trade.

There has been chatter about a Pascal Siakam-for-Simmons deal. Salary-wise, that would work one-for-one, but the 76ers would surely want more even as solid a player as Siakam is. Simmons is a three-time All-Star and one of the league’s top defenders. He just can’t shoot.

Toronto is 0-4 ATS in its past four in Philadelphia. The under is 6-1-1 in the past eight meetings overall.

Toronto Raptors

Toronto lost its third in a row Wednesday, 104-88 in Boston – the Raptors’ first straight up and against the spread road loss this season. The Dinos looked flat from the get-go as Boston led wire-to-wire. Fred VanVleet was 5-for-14 for 16 points. Scottie Barnes was a bright spot with 21 points, seven rebounds and four assists. Pascal Siakam had eight points. Backup big man Khem Birch sat out injured and won’t play here. Raptors coach Nick Nurse said ahead of Wednesday’s game that likely would rest Siakam on Thursday because he’s recently back from off-season surgery. With the Sixers so short-handed, that could make Nurse’s decision easier. The Raptors are 3-7-1 ATS in their past 11 following a loss.

Philadelphia 76ers

Philadelphia for sure will not have Joel Embiid for this game or a while after he tested positive for COVID on Monday. Second-leading scorer Tobias Harris is also on the COVID list – he will officially clear quarantine Thursday but it’s hard to imagine Harris playing right away after so much time away from the team and not practicing (called questionable). A couple of reserves are on the COVID list as well. Philadelphia is 0-2 this week without those guys and comes off a 118-109 home defeat to Milwaukee on Tuesday. Sharpshooter Seth Curry missed that one, too, and is questionable with a foot injury. Tyrese Maxey led the Sixers with 31 points. Andre Drummond has been starting for Embiid and Drummond is actually a better rebounder (he had 20 on Tuesday) but otherwise not in the same ballpark. The Sixers have no Canadians on the roster. They are 5-1 ATS in their past six as favourites.
