The Sixers made a big trade earlier this week and are 9-point favourites on the NBA odds.

Raptors vs. 76ers NBA Betting Odds

Toronto hosted Philadelphia on Saturday and lost 114-107 as Joel Embiid and Tyrese Maxey both had 34 points. The Sixers were without 10-time All-Star and former MVP James Harden as they tried to figure out what to do with The Beard. He had long wanted a trade to the Los Angeles Clippers and finally got his wish early Tuesday.

Philadelphia sent Harden, P.J. Tucker and Filip Petrusev to the Clippers for Marcus Morris, Robert Covington, Nic Batum, KJ Martin, a 2028 unprotected first-round pick, two second-round picks, a 2029 pick swap and an additional first-round pick from the Oklahoma City Thunder.

That Maxey has taken another step forward to his own superstardom early this season likely made it easier for Sixers boss Daryl Morey to finally pull the trigger. He had been demanding young Clippers guard Terance Mann in previous talks for Harden but didn’t get him. The Sixers are certainly much deeper now and brought back expiring contracts that keep them on track to potentially have as much as $50 million to $65 million (US) in salary cap space next summer or to use in other trades later this year.

The Raptors have now lost four straight against the Sixers, but Toronto leads the all-time series 62-46 and leads 28-26 as the road team.

Toronto Raptors

Toronto played easily its best game of the early season and it might be tougher to play a much better one all year than Wednesday’s 130-111 home upset victory over Milwaukee to snap a three-game skid. Heading into Wednesday, the Raptors were last in the league in offensive efficiency but shot 56 per cent overall and made 15 three-pointers.  Pascal Siakam broke out with 26 points and seven assists, while Scottie Barnes had 21 points and five assists. OG Anunoby was 7-for-7 from the floor for 16 points and did a fabulous job as the top defender on Giannis Antetokounmpo, who was held to 16 points. Dennis Schroder had 24 points and 11 rebounds and outplayed Damian Lillard. Schroder has been sensational so far and is fourth in the NBA in assists and 9.2 per game. The Dinos are 0-1 in the second of a back-to-back this season (that was the first loss to Philly).

Philadelphia 76ers

Coach Nick Nurse’s Sixers are well-rested, having been off since a 126-98 home win over Portland on Sunday behind 35 points and 15 rebounds from Joel Embiid, and 26 points and 10 rebounds from Tyrese Maxey, who might be the NBA’s most improved player in the early going — and he was still quite good last season. Maxey is averaging 30.3 points, 6.7 rebounds and 6.3 assists. Those are Luka Doncic/MVP numbers. Maxey was named Eastern Conference Player of the Week on Monday, his first such honour. We mentioned the James Harden trade above and all those guys acquired should be cleared to make their debuts on Thursday except Nic Batum (personal reasons and may just retire) if they are in Nurse’s rotation. He tended to keep a very short one while with Toronto. Monitor the third quarter tonight as the Sixers have outscored opponents by 33 points in that quarter.
