Not only are the Nuggets and 76ers regularly in the conversation for deep playoff runs, but Philly’s big man Joel Embiid is back from injury just in time for this game. He played a significant role in the 76ers’ 124-115 win over the Rockets on Monday. Denver is facing its third stern test in a row after downing the Pelicans and Pacers at home recently.

The NBA odds see this one as a close contest, pegging Nick Nurse’s 76ers squad as slight -2.5 favourites.

Nuggets vs. 76ers NBA Betting Odds

Alas, given that the Nuggets and 76ers play in different conferences, fans only get to appreciate Nikola Jokic vs. Joel Embiid tussles twice per season. The last four encounters have seen results flip-flop between the clubs, with the Nuggets being the most recent winner last March. Denver has also won two of the last five games played in Pennsylvania.

The first order of business when discussing the Nuggets as they enter this contest is that most of their prominent lineup is listed as questionable. Jamal Murray (tibia), Nikola Jokic (hip), Michael Porter Jr. (knee), Aaron Gordon (heel), it seems everyone is nursing some ailments. That doesn’t mean none of them will play, but they enter this match hobbling a bit. ATS the Nuggets are not a top-notch club, compiling only an 18-23 record.

The opposite holds in Philadelphia’s case. At 25-13, the 76ers are one of the more compelling props in the NBA despite being favoured almost on a nightly basis. This also promises to be an intriguing matchup between Philly’s sixth-ranked attack (119.8 points a match) and Denver’s fourth-ranked defence (111.0 points conceded a game). Embiid hasn’t played nearly as many games as some of the other NBA leaders (28), but his 34.9 points a night are sensational.

Denver Nuggets

Speaking of the Nuggets’ sound defence handling proficient attacking forces, they hosted the Indiana Pacers on Sunday and took care of business, winning 117-109. Granted, Tyrese Haliburton was absent, but the defensive performance was still commendable.

One category in which the Nuggets will look to improve is turnovers. They rank an excellent fourth, committing only 11.9 a night, but on Sunday they were at their sloppiest, coughing up the ball 22 times. The opposition may not have had its best player but giving the ball away so much will always keep a rival in the game. On the flip side, the Nuggets were ruthlessly efficient from the field, hitting 64. 8 per cent of their shots and tallying an incredible 31 assists.

Not only did all the starters hit double digits in points, but four of them reached the 20-point plateau (Jokic, Murray, Gordon, and Porter Jr.). With that kind of scoring touch, the bench didn’t have to do anything. Nuggets win 117-109.

Philadelphia 76ers

The United States celebrated Martin Luther King Day on Monday, hence the matinee matchup in Philly with the Houston Rockets. 76ers supporters had an additional reason to be joyous: the return of Joel Embiid from a knee injury.

The Rockets have certainly shown improvement this season, especially on the defensive end. However, their road woes are well documented and the 76ers took full advantage of being ungracious hosts. Time and time again we see how the simple details can translate to a win or a loss. Dunks and three-point shots are for show, but the free-throw line is often the make-or-break element. Houston was 19-for-32 whereas Philadelphia finished 29-for-34. Other than the fourth quarter when the 76ers took their foot off the gas pedal, the Rockets were never in this one.

Embiid rumbled his way to 41 points and Tyrese Maxey was flying with 27. Patrick Beverly, love him or hate him, is fitting in nicely in this 76ers lineup (six assists, five rebounds, 11 points, +15).
