NBA: Detroit Pistons at Brooklyn Nets

On Tuesday the Brooklyn Nets visit the Detroit Pistons. Can perchance some holiday spirit brighten the mood in Detroit?

The Pistons are finding new ways to put themselves in the history books but for all the wrong reasons. On Saturday night they visited the same Brooklyn Nets and lost 126-115, marking their 26th consecutive defeat. At 2-27, they are the worst team in the NBA and are a couple of additional losses away from equalling the Philadelphia 76ers of the 2014-2015 and 2015-2016 campaigns who lost 28 in a row over those two seasons.

Brooklyn and Detroit go at it again with the Nets as -6.5 favourites on the NBA odds, with the venue changing for the Motor City.

Nets vs. Pistons NBA Betting Odds

Despite the spectacular downfall of the Detroit Pistons, the truth is they did defeat the Nets very early in the calendar year. It was back in January when Detroit mustered a 130-122 win. However, that’s the only bright spot in the last 10 games between the sides, as Brooklyn captured the other nine.

There’s no question that the season hasn’t gone as well as Brooklyn would have hoped (we’ll get to Detroit). Whatever optimism the club entered the campaign with has been muted with a 14-15 record so far. On the flip side, they make for an interesting prop for betters given their 18-10-1 record ATS. The success versus the Pistons on Saturday was much needed, what with a five-game losing streak at the time hobbling their place in the Eastern Conference.

One might wonder how a squad with a risible 2-27 straight-up translate that into a 10-19. Unfortunately – or fortunately, depending on who one asks – the Pistons are so bad that they “benefit” from incredibly large spreads as underdogs sometimes. Then again, they began the season with three covers, and have only gone 7-19 since then.

Brooklyn Nets

After losing five games in a row, the Brooklyn Nets got some reprieve by facing the Detroit Pistons at home on Saturday. How much a win over the Pistons bolsters a team’s confidence is up for debate, but Brooklyn needed it badly.

The contest didn’t feature much that was memorable. The Nets mostly had control, and whenever the visitors made a small run to keep the score competitive, the hosts would confidently balloon their lead once more. Mikal Bridges was a regular fixture in the attack, finishing with 29 points – including a perfect 10-for-10 from the line. He and Cam Thomas, who put in 20, are the engines that drive this team. The Nets will go about as far as those two can take them. They’re also an excellent rebounding team, currently ranked third with 46.7 a game, yet the club is only 12th in offence, so they struggle to convert those rebounds into points.

Lonnie Walker IV is still out with a hamstring injury.

Detroit Pistons

For the Detroit Pistons, the losing will come to an end eventually. What’s disheartening is that so many of the 26 defeats that make up this unenviable streak are by 10 points or more. Saturday in Brooklyn was yet another example of the Pistons’ weaknesses coming to the fore to spoil another day at the office.

That Detroit only committed 14 turnovers is practically a positive. They’re the worst team in the league in that department, coughing up the ball 15.9 times a night. Monty Williams’ group also doesn’t score much, netting only 109.2 points per contest. That wouldn’t matter as much if the defence held its end of the bargain, but opponents put up 120.9 on them. Of note for Saturday’s contest was that four starters either hit 20 points or were very close to it. Bojan Bogdanovic has 19, Isaiah Stewart 20, Cade Cunningham 22, and Jaden Ivy 23.

Maybe a few days off to take their minds away from basketball and an opportunity to play the same team again, this time at home, can bolster their chances. They have to win at some point!
