The reigning champions ring in a new NBA season ready to defend their title on their home court – and the team originally thought to be their biggest challenge in the East might not be in this position for long. The Bucks host a Brooklyn Nets team in the season curtain raiser for both teams – and while the hosts are only minor favourites in this one, the Nets will have to deal with the likely extended absence of superstar point guard Kyrie Irving.

Milwaukee is a 1-point favourite to win on the NBA odds, with a total of 215.

Nets vs. Bucks NBA Odds

The Bucks are favoured by the slimmest of margins in the rematch of their memorable Eastern Conference semifinal series, won by Milwaukee in seven games. Milwaukee won and covered the final two games of that best-of-seven after falling behind 3-2, and will be looking to improve on a dismal 32-40 regular-season ATS record from last year. The Nets were much stronger in that regard (38-34 ATS), and carried that over into an 8-4 ATS run in the playoffs.

These teams have played stronger defence against one another than they have against most of the NBA in recent years, having converted the Over just once in their previous nine head-to-head meetings (1-7-1). And they’ve only seen one game in that span surpass the 235-point total this matchup carries. Both sides were superior Over plays overall in 2020-21, with the Bucks at 41-30-1 O/U and the Nets at 40-32.

Brooklyn Nets

How long will the Nets have to play without Irving? That’s likely up to him as he remains away from the team due to his refusal to get the COVID-19 vaccine. In his absence, James Harden is expected to assume point guard duties while Joe Harris moves into the starting shooting guard role. Brooklyn is still a formidable opponent even without Irving for the foreseeable future, with Harden and Kevin Durant forming one of the league’s most dangerous tandems.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks were by no means perfect last season, but shone when it mattered most as Giannis Antetokounmpo cemented his place as one of the best players in the world. The Bucks’ starting five will look mostly similar to the unit it trotted out for most of last season, with Giannis supported by capable veterans Jrue Holiday, Khris Middleton and Brook Lopez. Milwaukee will also look to take advantage of a Nets team that was a ho-hum 20-16 on the road last year.
