The Lakers have started off 1-2 but have faced three tough opponents in Denver, Phoenix, and Sacramento in whom they lost in overtime to last evening. Not only is Orlando the Lakers first Eastern opponent this season but their easiest thus far.

Magic vs. Lakers NBA Betting Odds

Monday’s the first time this season Orlando has not been their favourite after starting off with lowly Houston and Portland as opponents. But the Magic are both 2-0 outright and ATS with both of their contests finishing under the total. Yesterday the Lakers covered for their first time in six games.

Home court’s been a definite advantage for the Lakers as they are 10-2 outright in their last 12 games at Crypto.com Arena. Nine of L.A.’s last 10 times hosting Orlando the game has finished under. Six of Orlando’s last seven road games overall have finished under too but last season the Magic finished fifth-last in points for with 111.4 per game. L.A. had a top-six scoring offence a season ago but haven’t started off too strong in 2023–24, ranking 20th in field goal percentage through three contests.

Orlando Magic

Although they’ve yet to face a real test, Orlando’s team defence has been outstanding during their 2-0 start. Right now Orlando’s opponents are averaging 33.5 field goals and 91.5 points per game, both ranking as the best in the NBA for team defence. On Friday the Magic held Portland to 17 fourth quarter points which played pivotal in the five-point win. Offensively, 2021 first round pick Franz Wagner led the way with a team-high 23 points but the Magic got 35 points combined out of bench players Moritz Wagner and Cole Anthony too.

25-year-old Markelle Fultz is Orlando’s oldest stater, so the young Magic will use Monday against the Lakers as a true measuring stick game to see where they line up now and for years to come. But so far these high, young draft picks are starting to gel.

Los Angeles Lakers

Yesterday marked 20 years since LeBron James debuted in the NBA, but Sacramento spoiled the celebration with an overtime dub over James’ Lakers. And James did just about all he could in a losing effort, finishing with 27 points and 15 rebounds will being two assists shy of a triple-double. Anthony Davis led all Lakers scorers with 30 points and 16 rebounds.

Something to watch early on in this Lakers season is their bench scoring. Now it could just be a case of a slow start, but the Lakers have overall have seen poor performances from their bench players in all three outings. Rui Hachimura and Christian Wood each registering 11 points in yesterday’s loss marked the first time this season a Lakers bench player hit double-digits in points.
