With LeBron James sidelined with an ankle injury, Russell Westbrook finally showed the electric potential the Lakers were banking on when they traded for him in the offseason. And with James expected to return in Wednesday’s finale of a back-to-back, oddsmakers like the Lakers’ chances of pulling out a second consecutive victory as they visit an Oklahoma City Thunder team that has stumbled to an 0-4 start to the season.

L.A. opened as a heavy 9.5-point favourite to win on the NBA odds.

Lakers vs. Thunder NBA Betting Odds

The Lakers are considerable favourites thanks largely to the anticipated return of James, who missed his first game of the season but had to be happy with Los Angeles’s 125-121 overtime win over the San Antonio Spurs on Tuesday night. That marked the Lakers’ first cover since May 27, ending a stretch of six consecutive non-covers. The Thunder also ended an ATS drought Tuesday night, dropping at 106-98 decision to Golden State at +9.5.

With the total for this one expected to sit in the low-220s, it will be interesting to see whether bettors have more faith in the Lakers’ 3-1 O/U start, or if they’re bigger believers in the Thunder and their 1-3 O/U mark. If you’re looking for a potential tiebreaker, consider that these teams have converted the Over in six of their previous seven head-to-head meetings. Oklahoma City is 8-4 O/U in its previous 12 encounters with Pacific Division foes.

Los Angeles Lakers

Expect to see the Lakers use back-to-backs to give their Big Three some much-needed rest during the regular season. And while it is by no means a sure thing, it wouldn’t surprise anyone to see Los Angeles go without big man Anthony Davis in this one. Davis injured his knee in Tuesday’s win over San Antonio – and while he finished the game (and wound up playing 42 minutes in the process), the Lakers might opt to exercise caution Wednesday.

Oklahoma City Thunder

The winless Thunder finally showed signs of life Tuesday after dropping their first three decisions by an average of 22 points. The hosts led by as many as 12 points midway through the third quarter before running out of gas, but still eked out a narrow cover against Golden State. And while Oklahoma City is coming off a three-game sweep at the hands of the Lakers last season, two of the three meetings went to overtime.
