This is San Antonio’s first real test against a powerhouse Western Conference team. With the Spurs offence designed to flow through DeMar DeRozan, they’ll need a better showing than the eight-point performance he had against the Pelicans on Sunday. The Lakers opened as 6-point favourites on the NBA odds with a total of 230.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Lakers dominated San Antonio last season, winning all three meetings against the Spurs. Unsurprisingly, it was the duo of LeBron James and Anthony Davis who had the biggest impact in those games, with one of the two of them putting up the game-high in points throughout the three games (James twice, Davis once).

The Spurs have been hot against the spread so far this season, going 3-0 ATS in their first three games of the year and 5-1 ATS in their last six games overall, dating back to last year. Sunday’s game was the first time San Antonio didn’t hit the over this season. The over is 4-0 in the Spurs last four games playing on two days rest and 4-1 in their last five home games.

As they try to build chemistry among several off-season additions, it’s been a bit of a back-and-forth season for the Lakers, so far. L.A. has hit the over in two of four games this year and is 2-2 ATS. Dating back to last season the Lakers hadn’t lost a single game when leading heading into the fourth quarter, a streak of 59 games that was broken on Sunday.

Los Angeles Lakers

After sitting out L.A.’s win over the Timberwolves on Sunday, Anthony Davis’ return to the lineup against the Trail Blazers on Monday didn’t provide the spark his team needed. Davis finished with 13 points, 10 rebounds and five assists, while LeBron James had a game-high 29 points to go along with nine rebounds and six assists.

After putting together a deeper team in the off-season, thanks to the additions of players like Dennis Schroder, Montrezl Harrell and Marc Gasol, the Lakers have been conservative with 36-year-old James’ minutes, trying to have the face of the NBA rested and ready for another deep playoff run. James is currently averaging four minutes less per game than last season, which says a lot about how much deeper this team is than last years championship team. That’s a scary thought.

San Antonio Spurs

On a rare night when DeMar DeRozan seemingly couldn’t make a shot, finishing with eight points, it was his playmaking ability that was on display against the Pelicans on Sunday. DeRozan had a game-high 10 assists to help five different Spurs players hit double-digit scoring totals, including Rudy Gay’s team-high 22 points, but it wasn’t enough to prevent San Antonio’s first loss of the season.

San Antonio is a defensively minded team and Wednesday’s game will be their first big test of the season. Stifling the Lakers’ offence will obviously need to be centred on shutting down James and Davis and not letting them get into a flow. The Spurs have also been receiving valuable offensive contributions from their reserves, with Rudy Gay and Patty Mills both having scored 20 points in games they haven’t started, this season.
