The Los Angeles Lakers are making their way through an important stretch of their schedule. After failing to one-up the Phoenix Suns, a rival for a play-in spot in the Western Conference, the purple and gold head to Utah to contend with the Jazz, who are in a similar position. The latter will be playing the second of a home back-to-back after flattening the Raptors on Friday, 145-113.

Spreads rarely get as close as this one. The NBA odds have L.A. as the slightest of favourites at -1.5.

Lakers vs. Jazz NBA Betting Odds

The Utah Jazz had three opportunities to vanquish the Lakers during 2023 but fell each time. Two were during the latter stages of last season and the third was earlier during the current campaign. Before then came a trio of wins for the Salt Lake City-based outfit against their Californian foes.

If L.A. figures to be a part of the playoff conversation in the weeks and months ahead, they’ll have to right many wrongs away from home. The Lake Show is only 6-13 on its travels. Darvin Ham’s group has lost five of its six most recent road games. Incidentally, the lone victory came against the terrific Oklahoma City Thunder. Los Angeles is only 16-23 ATS this season. Almost everyone who has been in the starting lineup is listed as day-to-day at the time of writing, from King James to Cam Reddish.

This Jazz team is playing to the tune of wins over heavyweights like the Nuggets, 76ers, and Bucks. Winners of four straight, the Jazz are scintillating these days. They didn’t just defeat Milwaukee, Denver, or Philadelphia, they obliterated them. Those successes helped improve the club’s efforts ATS to a commendable 24-16. It should also be highlighted that the Jazz are winners of six consecutive in front of their fans.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers are a great home team this season, directing many visiting teams to the exit with sad faces. However, on Thursday the Phoenix Suns, especially Bradley Beal, looked to make their stay far more pleasant.

The irony is that the Lakers didn’t even shoot more poorly than the Suns, going 50 per cent to Phoenix’s 49. 5 per cent. The hosts were more accurate from beyond the arc as well (38.2 to 35.9). It was the free throw line that sunk L.A, with a moribund 64 per cent efficiency in that context. The other problem was Suns guard Bradley Beal. He finished the night with 37 points and shot from pretty much everywhere on the court, even breaking Austin Reaves’ ankles on one play. Every Lakers starter, save Cam Reddish, was atrocious on defence. LeBron James finished with -25, Anthony Davis with -24, and Taurean Prince an unbelievable -30. Lakers lose big time, 127-109.

Utah Jazz

Recent performances from the Jazz beg the question of how much longer they can keep up with their current pace. Playing a back-to-back might help answer that question, but there was little doubt on Friday night at home against the Toronto Raptors.

Toronto played the hosts tough for about one and a half quarters before Utah opted to extinguish its Cretaceous Period-inspired opponent. The Jazz were sensational from the field. The most threatening aspect of their sudden surge is that the offence is evenly distributed. For a team that finished with 145 points, its leading scorer was Lauri Markkanen with 22. Collin Sexton was the only other starter who hit 20. Bringing Jordan Clarkson off the bench was the not-so-secret ingredient, as he poured in 21 of his own.

When a team corrals 56 rebounds to the other side’s 31, a lot of the leg work is already complete. Points in the paint? Make it 58 to 32 for the Jazz. This was never a contest. Utah wins 145-113.
