The Lakers and Bulls were on opposite ends of NBA results on Monday night. L.A. was home playing a road-weary Knicks team, but New York walked off the court as 114-109 victors. Chicago was in Philadelphia to play the heavily favoured 76ers and somehow pulled off the upset 108-104.

Lakers vs. Bulls NBA Betting Odds

Coincidentally, despite that the Bulls have mostly been a meandering franchise for a few years, they’re the ones with superior results against the Lakers over the past couple of seasons. Maybe not last time in March when L.A. won 121-100, but before that the Bulls had rattled off three consecutive victories, including two as the road team.

While the Lakers may be a decent bet on the moneyline, things are different against the spread. It hasn’t helped that L.A. has failed to cover four consecutive opportunities, hence the 11-16 tally. That they couldn’t cover either of their two games in San Antonio last week says a lot.

One thing is for certain. They’re facing a Bulls team that once again struggles to put points on the board. Chicago is only 28th in points per game in the NBA with 109.9. They also have the third-worst field goal percentage (44.9 per cent). That said, Chicago has covered their last three spreads to improve the record to 13-14-1.

Los Angeles Lakers

We’ll give the Lakers this much: they don’t have an easy schedule. After spending a week in Vegas for the elimination games of the In-Season Tournament, they spent the next week on the road, came home for one game against a solid Knicks team, and now head out for more travelling.

Perhaps that influenced Monday night’s match to some degree. Save for some brief spells, the Lakers looked like the second-best team on the hardwood floor. They made some impressive defensive stops in the first half against New York’s best attackers, but couldn’t convert those into points often enough. Even though the Knicks didn’t necessarily shoot the lights out, the Lakers were just average (42.4 from the field, 31.7 from three). For a team equipped with LeBron James and Anthony Davis, they were surprisingly outscored in the paint 62-52.

Those two once again led the way with a combined 57 points and 25 rebounds. All other starters had awful shooting nights, though. Austin Reaves has become one of the game’s great threats off the bench (20 points, seven assists). Despite that trio’s efforts, make the final 114-109 for the Knicks.

Chicago Bulls

It’s been a mostly miserable season for the Chicago Bulls. The team that had least made it to the first round of the postseason two years ago and the play-in games last season looks as if it’s taken a major step backwards. But even mediocre teams can have great nights, as evidenced by Chicago’s unexpected 108-104 win in Philadelphia on Monday.

Conversely, even really good teams have off nights, which probably explains how the 76ers shot worse than the Bulls from the field overall (47.2 to 43.2) and from beyond the arc (41.4 to 34.4.). Save for the final period, the Bulls were in control for most of the night, meaning that even a 35-27 fourth in favour of the 76ers wasn’t enough to turn the tide – although it was darn close down the stretch. Coby White had himself a night, leading the Bulls with 24 points, eight assists, and nine rebounds, including one bucket he announced with his chest. Nikola Vucevic is the other Bull who came out to play harder than usual, what with his 23 points and eight rebounds. DeMar DeRozan only had 15 but two were critical free throws in the dying seconds to make it a two-score game.
