Both teams are coming off disheartening losses earlier in the week and will look to get back on track at the Wells Fargo Center. It may be a taller challenge for the 76ers, but more on that in a minute.

The basketball gurus have pinned the 76ers as 2.5-point favourites to win on the NBA odds.

Knicks vs. 76ers NBA Betting Odds

Given Philly’s relative success in the past few seasons and New York’s mediocrity, meetings between these clubs generally favour the Pennsylvanian side. The 76ers have walked off the court as victors in eight of the 10 previous encounters.

Through seven matches, the Knicks are only 3-4 against the spread, which is corroborated by their mediocre 3-4 win-loss record. In a curious twist of fate, they started the year 3-0 ATS, giving bettors with a soft spot for New York some hope. Since then, they’ve failed to cover four consecutive times.

Doc Rivers’ 76ers have not fared well ATS at this early stage in the season, having earned themselves a 4-5 record, which mirrors their outright win-loss tally. They were favoured against a mighty Bucks team but lost, then expected to trounce San Antonio yet suffered defeat. The strangest sequence was a back-to-back away series against the Raptors. They were favoured in the first game and lost, then pinned as underdogs in the second game and won.

Food for thought: The Knicks have yet to win on the road this year (0-3) and the 76ers have struggled at home (1-3).

New York Knicks

Coach Tom Thibodeau’s troupe played host to the Atlanta Hawks on Wednesday night. It was a game that highlighted why the Knicks are at times fun to watch (especially when playing in front of a vocal Madison Square Garden crowd) and infuriating. While the franchise is thankfully past the doldrums of the mid-to-late 2010s, they’re still maddeningly inconsistent.

The contest started out in smashing fashion, as New York roared out the gate, attacking Atlanta in the paint. Canadian RJ Barrett was getting in on the action, as did the hot-and-cold Julius Randle. The home side led by as many as 23 points in the second frame. Leading by that much and playing at home, coughing the game up is borderline inexcusable, yet that’s exactly what the Kicks did. Or perhaps the “cough up the ball” is more accurate. They had 17 turnovers overall, most of them in the second half, which helped the Hawks’ Dejounte Murray’s hot night. Final score: Atlanta 112-99 New York, including 32-10 in the third quarter alone. Yikes.

Philadelphia 76ers

Friday night’s tilt against the visiting Knicks just got a lot more difficult. In addition to Joel Embiid’s questionable status (flu symptoms), it was announced on Thursday that James Harden suffered a right foot injury Wednesday night and will miss the next month of play.

Looking at how the week’s home-and-home series against the Wizards went, the team could use Embiid’s presence sooner rather than later. To be fair, Philly split the pair of contests, so it wasn’t a total disaster, but close inspection of the game footage revealed that, in the loss, Washington had success attacking the 76ers in the paint. In the win, they took what they wanted, when they wanted it. Tyrese Maxey was electric in both games, however, and he’ll need to be the main man in Harden’s absence.
