For their part, the Lakers put an end to their own three-game run of defeats with a testy victory over the Houston Rockets on Monday.

Sacramento sits as -4 favourites on the  NBA odds. whereas the over-under is set at 244.5.

Kings vs. Lakers NBA Betting Odds

This is the last of four scheduled dates between Sacramento and the Lake Show this season. All four will have transpired inside a fairly tight window, from November through the middle of January.

For now, the Kings hold a 2-1 edge in the season series. True to the playing styles of each squad, all have been rather high-scoring affairs. Even the contest with the lowest offensive wattage totalled 234 points. Los Angeles cut their rival’s lead in the four-game set in half with the most recent game on Jan. 7, winning 126-134.

For the first time in what feels like forever, the Sacramento Kings are in the conversation as an interesting franchise. The battle for a top-four finish in the West is far from over, but at the moment the Kings are fourth with a healthy 24-18 record. Betters have also reaped the benefits of Sacramento’s relative success this season, as the unit has earned itself an identical 24-18 tally against the spread. Their run of four victories, albeit against weak opponents, has led to covers in each instance.

Even though the 19-22-1 record ATS doesn’t look encouraging, the reality is that it was a lot worse in early December. One thing is for sure when considering these two troupes: it’s very tempting to consider the Over. Sacramento has the number one scoring offence in the NBA and the Lakers are a very strong seventh. Furthermore, both have weak defences (the Kings 24th and Lakers 27th).

Sacramento Kings

Mike Brown’s unit is experiencing something new to them: winning more often than losing. The fanbase must be having a blast, especially since the team plays a very high-tempo, fiery brand of basketball that sees high final scorers. Consider that Sacramento has notched at least 130 points in five consecutive outings. The last time they scored fewer than 115 was eight games ago against the Grizzlies (a 118-108 defeat).

They haven’t fared terribly well against really good teams, but generally take care of business against sides hovering around them or significantly lower than them in the standings. The Lakers fit that bill. The current string of victories is critical for this fresh-faced side, regardless if it came at the expense of the Magic, Spurs, and Rockets (twice). De’Aaron Fox and Domantas Sabonis are proving to be a potent force, and Harrison Barnes‘ veteran leadership is a key component to the squad’s recent success.

Los Angeles Lakers

Games like Monday night’s stressful 140-132 win over the lowly Rockets are par for the course. It’s quite remarkable how L.A.’s defence fails them on an almost nightly basis, but several of their players, like LeBron James and Russell Westbrook, aren’t quite what they used to be (with all due respect to their brilliant careers), and younger, faster teams rush by them to the basket.

Sticking to the positives, apart from the much-needed win, LeBron is now the second NBA player all-time to shatter the 38,000 points plateau on Sunday, and on Monday earned the 100th 40-point game of his career. His 48 points was a season-high. Whatever the team’s deficiencies, of which there are several (chief among them being defence), the King can still bring it and help his side win games.
