Prior to their showdown Monday night in California, both the Utah Jazz and Los Angeles Lakers last opponent was the Denver Nuggets. Utah defeated the Nuggets by 23 points and snapped a four-game skid. The Lakers lost to Denver by 37 to extend their losing streak to three games.

The contrast in the teams’ results versus Denver is symbolism for how each’s season is going. After Phoenix and Golden State, Utah’s the next best thing in the West with a 29-14 record and third-place position. The Lakers are below .500 for the first time in 2022, and their 21-22 record is good for eighth-place in the West.

Jazz vs. Lakers NBA Betting Odds

The Jazz have been monsters on the road this season with a 15-6 record straight up and 12-9 against the spread. And although Monday’s the second of a back-to-back for Utah, they were off the court for three days prior, but it’s also their seventh game on the road in their last eight overall. Head-to-head, Utah’s covered once in their last five visits to L.A. to face the Lakers.

Monday’s the first of three meetings this season between the Jazz and Lakers. The Jazz won the season series 2-1 last season with the home club winning two of three.

Take note — the over has hit in L.A.’s five most recent games.

Utah Jazz

Centre Rudy Gobert returned to Utah’s lineup after a four-game absence thanks to a positive COVID test, and Gobert had himself a night with 18 points and 19 rebounds while going seven for seven on field goal attempts. Gobert’s recorded 15 straight double-doubles dating back to December 5. Team-leading scorer Donovan Mitchell had a game-high 31 in the win, helping the Jazz remain the league’s top scoring unit with 115.1 points per outing.

Veteran forward Rudy Gay also returned to Utah’s lineup Sunday, while Jared Butler, Elijah Hughes, and Hassan Whiteside all sat out due to health and safety protocols.

Los Angeles Lakers

Saturday at Denver was the second-best defeat ever suffered by LeBron James at the professional level. It was so bad that even Lakers legend Magic Johnson chimed in by saying owner Jeanie Buss deserves better. James led L.A. with 25 in the loss and has led his team in scoring in 13 straight. But as a team the Lakers gave up 23 three-pointers and then shot 33 per cent from the arc. Russell Westbrook added 19 on seven-of-15 shooting in a losing effort.

Carmelo Anthony missed his third straight game with a back injury and is questionable Monday.
