NBA: Atlanta Hawks at Toronto Raptors

The Raptors look for a little payback for a bad recent loss in Charlotte as they host the rebuilding Hornets on Monday with the Dinos as solid favourites on the NBA odds.

A few key Hornets are in question so the number is a bit in flux.

Hornets vs. Raptors NBA Betting Odds

Monday is the second of four regular-season meetings between the teams with the Hornets returning to Toronto on March 3. On Dec. 8 in Charlotte, the Raptors were 5.5-point favourites and upset 119-116. Gordon Hayward scored 24 points, Miles Bridges 22, Terry Rozier 21 and 13 helpers, and rookie No. 2 overall pick Brandon Miller 20 points as the Hornets shot 55.7 per cent overall, 52 per cent from deep and made 18 of 20 free throws. That remains the Hornets’ lone win in their past seven games.

Scottie Barnes was 12-for-18 for 31 points with 10 assists, and Pascal Siakam had 25 points on 11-for-15 shooting the other three Toronto starters combined for just 26 points. The Raptors shot 50.5 per cent overall but made only 6-for-32 from deep.

Toronto now trails the all-time series 48-46 but is 29-19 as the home team and has won the past five.

Charlotte Hornets

Charlotte lost its fourth straight game (since that Toronto upset win), 135-82 at home to Philadelphia on Saturday – probably fair to say that a 53-point loss is rock bottom for this struggling franchise so far this year. It was the worst loss in franchise history. The previous mark was a  137-87 defeat to the Milwaukee Bucks on Jan. 10, 2000. Charlotte played without three starters in LaMelo Ball, Gordon Hayward and Mark Williams, two key reserves in P.J. Washington and Cody Martin, and then lost top scorer Terry Rozier in the third quarter when he caught an elbow to the nose. Ball, the team’s best player, has been out for weeks and won’t play Monday. Martin hasn’t played yet this season and won’t, either. The rest haven’t been ruled out yet.

Toronto Raptors

Always tough to beat the same team in the same gym in back-to-back games in the regular season and the Raptors learned that Friday as they lost 125-104 at home to Atlanta just 48 hours after beating the Hawks 135-128 at Scotiabank Arena. Trae Young was unstoppable with 38 points in Friday’s win. Both teams shot better than 50 per cent from the field, but Toronto’s 104 points were the fewest by an Atlanta opponent this season. The Hawks won the battle of the boards 55-32 and had a 16-3 edge in offensive rebounds. That led to the Hawks outscoring the Raptors 24-3 in second-chance points. Scottie Barnes had 23 points for the Dinos but no one else with more than 15. Toronto extended its streak of 30-or-more assists to four straight games, matching the longest streak in the NBA this season (Sacramento from Nov. 13-19) and also tying a franchise record set from Jan. 8-17, 2020. Raptors reserve forward Jalen McDaniels, who rarely plays,  was selected by the Hornets in the second round (52nd overall) of the 2019 NBA Draft and played his first four seasons in Charlotte. The Raptors appear healthy entering Monday.
