The Toronto Raptors are starting to feel right at home in Tampa, Fla., as they welcome the Miami Heat on Wednesday night for the first meeting of the season. The NBA odds will depend on the availability of a few key Heat players.

These clubs play again in Tampa on Friday, before the Dinos visit South Florida on Feb. 24.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Had Toronto beaten Boston in Game 7 of last season’s Eastern Conference playoff semifinals in the bubble, the Raptors and Heat would have met in the East Finals.

In the 2019-20 regular season, Miami won two of three meetings – one was played in the Orlando bubble and that was Toronto’s lone victory (107-103) behind 36 points from Fred VanVleet. He was 7-for-12 from three-point range and 13-for-13 from the free-throw line.

VanVleet averaged 20.7 points in the three games vs. Miami, with Pascal Siakam at 18.5 points and 9.0 rebounds, and Kyle Lowry 13.7 points, 8.0 assists and 6.0 rebounds. Goran Dragic led the Heat, averaging 19.0 points (two games), while Jimmy Butler put up 15.3 points, 10.7 rebounds and 8.0 assists per game, and Bam Adebayo had 14.3 points and 9.7 rebounds.

As the “home” team, Toronto is 21-22 all-time in the series. The Dinos have covered just three of the past 10 overall against the Heat.

Miami Heat

The Heat have been one of the teams hit hardest by COVID protocols, which somewhat helps explain their disappointing 5-7 record. They did end a three-game losing streak Monday with a 113-107 home win over Detroit – a game that was pushed back five hours to ensure Miami had enough players. Butler and Avery Bradley missed the game due to COVID-19 protocols and young sharpshooter Tyler Herro was out with neck spasms. Whether they play here (not really Bradley) will affect the spread. Adebayo may have replaced Butler as the team’s best all-around player, at this point, and he had 28 points, 11 rebounds and five assists Monday. He also has missed time because of COVID-19 protocols.

Toronto Raptors

We projected the Raptors to win fairly close against Dallas on Monday but the 116-93 decision wasn’t close, as the Dinos won their third straight in Tampa and overall. It surely helped that the Mavs were playing in the second of a back-to-back and had nothing offensively, shooting 37.8 per cent. Toronto hit exactly half its shots overall. Lowry had 23 points, nine rebounds and seven assists, and Siakam scored 15 of his 19 points in the second half as the Raptors pulled away. Chris Boucher was a beast off the bench again with 21 points and 10 rebounds. It was Boucher’s fourth game this season with at least 20 points and 10 boards off the bench; the rest of the NBA has five combined. Alex Len was out again because of COVID-19 protocols, but the Dinos haven’t missed him.
