It’s not the start the Los Angeles Lakers envisioned – and things don’t get any easier Sunday as they tangle with the red-hot Memphis Grizzlies. The Lakers have stumbled to an 0-2 opening with both of their losses coming on home court. And while they come into Sunday’s encounter with Memphis as comfortable favourites, the Grizzlies have looked terrific en route to wins in each of their first two games.

Grizzlies vs. Lakers NBA Betting Odds

Los Angeles is a six-point favourite Sunday despite being outscored by a combined 17 points in season-opening losses to the Golden State Warriors and Phoenix Suns. Their average of 118.5 points per game against is the highest in the Western Conference and could be in danger of rising against a Memphis team that has averaged an incredible 126 points in its two wins. That all said, the Lakers have won six of the previous seven meetings between the teams.

That last trend seems to be resonating most with the Sports Interaction crowd, which is backing the home team at a 70-percent clip. And an almost identical portion of public bettors are taking the Over 221, which is installed at -110. The Grizzlies are riding an eight-game Over streak dating back to the end of last season, and have averaged a combined 243.5 points in their first two games. The Lakers, on the other hand, are 7-3 to the Under in their past 10.

Memphis Grizzlies

For years, the Grizzlies were synonymous with offensive struggles, finishing no higher than 15th in offensive efficiency every year since 2014-15. But it’s a new era in Tennessee, at least through two games: Memphis leads the NBA with an offensive efficiency of 124.0 thanks largely to a 53-percent success rate from the field. Three players are averaging better than 20 points per game, led by standout point guard Ja Morant (32.5).

Los Angeles Lakers

It’s one thing to have the second-worst defensive rating in the NBA (that honour belongs to the Lakers, who allow 108 points per 100 possessions). It’s another entirely when you aren’t producing enough offence to atone for those defensive shortcomings. That’s the dilemma the Lakers are facing, as they rank 23rd in offensive efficiency (100.8) and have been remarkably careless with the ball, having committed 34 turnovers over their first two contests.
