The long-awaited and heavily-anticipated matchup between the Boston Celtics and the Toronto Raptors begins on Sunday afternoon in Game 1 of their best-of-seven series. The defending champions are the favoured side but the C’s present a stiff challenge.

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

The Raptors are 2.5-point favourites in Game 1 and -175 chalk to win the series at Sports Interaction. That equals out to a win probability of 63.6 percent. In other words, SIA has the series priced as if it thinks the Raptors have around a 64 percent chance of winning the series.

That’s somewhat surprising considering the recent results in the head-to-head history. Boston is 3-1 straight up in its four games against Toronto this season and the club is 5-2 against the spread in its last seven contests against its Atlantic Division rival.

Are the Celtics a bad matchup for the Dinos or was head coach Nick Nurse playing coy in the regular season? Toronto’s worst result in the bubble came at the heads of Brad Stevens’ and the C’s. Boston won easily 122-100 against a fully-healthy Raptor side.

About 75 percent of Sports Interaction customers are backing Toronto to cover the 2.5-point spread in Game 1. Meanwhile, more than 85 percent expect the game to exceed the 216.5-point Over/Under line.

It’s not just Game 1 and in the series where SIA is showing respect to the reigning champs. Toronto is the fourth favourite to win the title at +400. The club trails only the Lakers (+275), the Clippers (+275) and Bucks (+325) on the NBA championship odds board. Boston is next but with much longer odds (+1200).

This means a $100 wager on the Raptors would return $400 if they were able to repeat as champions, while a $100 bet on the Celtics would yield a $1200 profit if they were to lift the Larry O’Brien Trophy.

Boston Celtics

The C’s won’t have Gordon Hayward in this series. The versatile wing is out with an ankle injury. Boston still has its big three of Kemba Walker, Jaylen Brown and Jayson Tatum. Brown and Tatum are going to get buckets – even against the Raptors’ active defence.

Walker is the player to watch for the Celtics. The 30-year-old point guard is dealing with a stiff knee but he seemed untroubled against the Sixers during the first round of the playoffs. Kemba averaged 24.3 points on 49.3 percent shooting with Shake Milton on him. Will he be able to put up similar numbers with Kyle Lowry in his shorts?

Raptors

Speaking of Lowry, the All-Star point guard left after nine minutes of action in Game 4 against the Nets after he twisted his ankle. Lowry practiced with his teammates on Saturday and Nurse said he looked OK. Lowry is still listed as questionable to play in Game 1.
