From Larry Bird vs Magic Johnson, Paul Pierce vs Kobe Bryant, to Jayson Tatum vs LeBron James, it’s always a special occasion when these franchises cross paths.

Joe Mazzulla’s Celtics sit as 3.5-point favourites on the NBA odds, indicating this is a closer matchup than it would have been just a few weeks ago. The O/U is 233.5.

Over the past 10 regular-season meetings between these two franchises, each has claimed five victories. It seems befitting of such a historic rivalry. Moreover, apart from the bubble season, the Lakers haven’t even been especially good as of late. It’s quite telling that they would get up to play their decades-old foes and earn wins even when the goings are tough.

Boston still sports an enviable 17-11 record against the spread, although an alarming trend is beginning to rear its head. The team has only covered once in the past four games in which they were favoured. In fact, they’ve emphatically looked like the second-best outfit in a couple of those contests. They’ve also suffered defeat twice in a row after a brilliant start to their six-game road trip.

As for the Lakers, they’re still meandering in a disappointing season. That pertains not only to their 11-15 record in the standings but the 10-15 effort they’ve put in against the spread (one game against the Spurs was a “pick’em” match). There have been several contests this season for which LA failed to cover very generous spreads as underdogs: +12.5 against Toronto, +9.5 against Phoenix, +8 against Minnesota, and +7.5 against the Warriors.

Boston Celtics

A road trip that began swimmingly is beginning to wear on Boston. All eyes were on the date with the Warriors on Saturday night. What arguably should have been a fun, tight battle ended up being a 123-017 defeat and one of the Celtics’ worst performances of the season. More frustrating was Jayson Tatum’s performance, which eerily resembled his struggles in the Finals last year, with missed shots from everywhere on the court and turnovers galore.

There was a chance to make up for the poor effort on Monday against the Clippers, but they squandered it in a 113-93 loss. The oft-injured Kawhi Leonard had his coming out party of the season, tallying 25 points on 10-12 shooting. Fellow Clipper Paul George also gave the Celtics’ defence fits with a 26-point night. Both three-point and free throw shooting were poor for the visitors (23.1 per cent and 69.2 per cent). For once, the lack of rebounding skills genuinely hurt them.

Los Angeles Lakers

Darvin Ham’s troupe returns home after a road trip that had its share of ups and downs. Such is the team’s story so far this season. They headed into Sunday’s tilt with the Detroit Pistons as losers of three straight, although they played their tails off in a Friday night defeat in Philadelphia.

Thankfully for them, the Pistons simply aren’t very good this year, floundering in the Eastern Conference basement at 7-22. In what fans hope will be a more regular sighting this year, the Lakers put on a very solid show to earn a 124-117. There was a spell in the third quarter when it looked as though Detroit might take over, but LA course-corrected in the final frame. LeBron James and Anthony Davis feasted on a porous Pistons defence, amassing 35 and 34 points respectively.
