LeBron James gets ready to face his former team when the Los Angeles Lakers host the Cleveland Cavaliers on Sunday night. Cleveland is arguably the hottest team in the league right now, winning seven straight. The same definitely can’t be said about the Lakers. They’ve severely underperformed and are losers of six out of their first eight games of the season. Could the Lakers inch closer to getting back to .500 on the season or will the Cavaliers get their eighth straight win?

The Cavs are 4-point favourites to win on the NBA odds, with a total of 221.5.

Cavaliers vs. Lakers NBA Betting Odds

The Cavaliers have covered seven straight overall and six in a row when their opponents allowed more than 100 points in their previous game. Over has been a great bet with them as it’s cashed in 11 of their last 12 games against teams with a straight-up losing record on the season.

On the other hand, the Lakers are 2-6 ATS this season, which mirrors their overall straight up record. They’re also 9-19 in their last 28 when they’ve allowed over 125 points in their previous outing.

Cleveland Cavaliers

Cleveland was without two of their best players on Friday against the Detroit Pistons, yet they were able to blow them out anyway. Both Donovan Mitchell and Darius Garland remain listed as questionable and while it didn’t matter against the Pistons, it’s unclear how much it will factor against the Lakers.

In a worst-case scenario, neither player is able to get going. If that’s the case, look for their front court to dominate. Jarrett Allen and Evan Mobley are looking like the best tandem in the paint in basketball right now. Caris LeVert is a streaky scorer that could explode and Kevin Love has been unbelievably consistent off the bench when they need him most.

Even without two key contributors, the Cavs have enough to win and cover here as the Lakers have been nothing short of a mess.

Los Angeles Lakers

The Lakers just aren’t looking like a team that’s going to contend for a championship or even playoff spot right now. Their star power is certainly there but the roster isn’t built for success. Russell Westbrook has been transitioning between the bench and the starting lineup due to being a poor fit next to LeBron James. LeBron hasn’t been able to be as effective due to not having any knockdown three-point shooters surrounding him either. There are chemistry challenges all over the place.

This team is scoring just 108.5 points per game this season, which is the sixth-fewest in the NBA. They’ve also allowed at least 110 points to their opponent in five straight, so the math doesn’t really match up to wins for them. If Mitchell and Garland are out, the Lakers might have a shot here. The fact that these two are questionable and the Lakers are still a home dog tells us a lot, though.
