The Houston Rockets are hoping their decision to reunite Russell Westbrook and James Harden in the Lone Star State will help propel them to an NBA championship this season. Their home opener should provide a decent measuring stick of where they are at right now as they’ll host the Milwaukee Bucks on Thursday night, the team that finished with the most regular season wins in the NBA last season (60). In one of the better early season matchups, which side is the best bet here?

NBA Point Spread and Betting Analysis

Milwaukee went 27-14 as the visiting team last season, which matched the Golden State Warriors for the best road record in the NBA. The Bucks were also an NBA-best 57-36-4 against the spread (ATS) last season, covering the number 61.3 percent of the time. The Bucks went 20-10 against Western Conference opponents in 2018-19 but are merely 21-31 in their last 52 as a dog.

Meanwhile, Houston was around the middle of the pack last season with a 47-43-3 ATS record. The Rockets covered the spread just 52.2-percent of the time. Houston went 31-10 at the Toyota Center a year ago. However, they are just 2-5 ATS in their last seven at home when the total is 230 or higher.

Milwaukee Bucks

The Bucks will be looking to pick up from where they left off last season when they won both of the head-to-head meetings with Houston. Milwaukee won those games by an average of 10.5 points. The biggest question mark heading into this year is whether or not the Bucks can overcome the losses of Malcolm Brogdon, Nikola Mirotic and Tony Snell. Milwaukee added Kyle Korver, Wes Matthews and Robin Lopez in an effort to offset those losses but the chemistry of the team has changed slightly. The MVP Giannis Antetokounmpo is still just 24, which means his best could still be yet to come. With Khris Middleton and Eric Bledsoe returning, along with big men Brook Lopez and Ersan Ilyasova, the Bucks should not fall off any – if at all – from last year’s 60-win team.

Houston Rockets

The addition of Westbrook to this current Houston roster could really put this team over the top. Playing with two former MVP’s on your roster should be a winning formula and since these two have played together before, they should be able to get along just fine. However, the other players on the roster will need to figure out how to work with Harden and Westbrook. Clint Capela’s return to health will be a key early on this season. Meanwhile, the additions of Tyson Chandler and Thabo Sefolosha should provide some valuable depth, which this team was lacking a season ago.
