Robert Whittaker

As the current No. 1 contender and former champion of the middleweight division, Robert Whittaker is the favourite this Saturday versus Darren Till.

The UFC’s fourth and final card on Fight Island will be this Saturday, headlined by a Fight Night main event between middleweights Robert Whittaker and Darren Till.  Former middleweight champion Whittaker is the favourite at -170 on the MMA odds with Darren Till coming in at +130.

Fight Island July 25: Darren Till v Robert Whittaker

  • Robert Whittaker -155
  • Darren Till +125

Robert Whittaker UFC Fight Island Odds

Before Israel Adesanya took the middleweight title from Robert Whittaker by knocking him out in the second round at UFC 243 in October, Whittaker had been riding a dominant 9-fight win streak.  As the current No. 1 contender and former champion of the middleweight division, the Australian fighter has proven to be an elite contender with a career record of 21-5.

A natural middleweight, Whittaker normally keeps his weight 15-pounds heavier than Darren Till.  Other than size, the 29-year-old’s biggest advantage over Till is his average of 4.82 significant strikes landed per minute, compared to just 2.41 for Till.  Whittaker also has a slight edge in significant strike defense (61 per cent Whittaker, 59 per cent Till) and takedown defense (84 per cent Whittaker, 82 per cent Till), while also averaging higher in takedown accuracy (57 per cent Whittaker, 41 per cent Till).

The biggest question mark about Whittaker is where his head is.  After pulling out of a scheduled fight against Jared Cannonier in March, he later admitted he was suffering from burnout and stopped training completely for a time.  Has his training for this fight been affected or has the time off been good for one of the UFC’s best pound-for-pound fighters?

Darren Till UFC Fight Island Odds

Originally debuting as a middleweight in 2013, Darren Till fought as a welterweight from November 2014 to March 2019.  The British fighter moved back up to middleweight for his last fight, which resulted in a split decision win over Kelvin Gastelum at UFC 244 in November, bringing his career mark to 18-2-1.

Looking at the positive side for Till, the 27-year-old has a one inch reach advantage over Whittaker, which Till will need to use, as neither fighter is known for their ground work.  Till’s 0.66 average takedowns per 15 minutes is better than Whittaker’s average of 0.37, but both fighters seem to avoid the ground at all cost.

Although he is ranked as the No. 5 middleweight contender, the big question about Till is if it was the right decision to give up the size and strength advantage he enjoyed in the lighter division to fight stronger opponents at middleweight?

Whittaker vs. Till UFC Fight Island Prediction:

Whittaker is rested and a win on Saturday will almost guarantee him a shot to reclaim his middleweight title.  Look for Whittaker to wear down Till and win by a late round KO/TKO.
