Matt Lauer is Miserable Due to Ann Curry Backlash

Things aren’t exactly panning out for Matt Lauer, who is reportedly “freaked out” by the onslaught of hate that has descended upon him since his co-host, Ann Curry, was shown the door.

Fans have majorly backlashed against Lauer since he re-signed his contract with the long-running Today show and made it clear that he wanted Curry, a longtime fixture of the show, out. Now people have been screaming at him on the streets of Manhattan, calling him names and blaming him for Curry’s dismissal. Laure reportedly set Curry’s firing in motion back in February of this year when one of his stipulations of signing on for another contract involved getting rid of Ann.

Network sources tell TMZ Matt is “miserable” over what he believes are hateful and unfair tirades. Matt says the harassment is constant, with people screaming things like “You’re a bad guy,”and “You got Ann fired. Does that make you happy?”

Matt is telling people at NBC there have also been lots of sarcastic comments about his $25 million salary. He feels “abused,” insisting Ann’s firing is not his fault.

One network source says, “It’s driving him crazy. He’s so unhappy.”

Most people in Lauer’s shoes would up and quit, but he is pretty much locked into his $25 million a year contract – and Lauer and NBC are committed to one another despite the fact that the Today show has been in a freefall in the ratings since Curry’s tear-filled departure, with longtime rival ABC’s Good Morning America having catapulted itself into the top spot.

Now, we are left wondering, how in the world will Matt Lauer get his groove back?
