He’s a household name where-ever skates are laced, pucks are dropped and the great game is played. He was name-checked by the late Stompin’ Tom Connors in The Hockey Song. He’s one of Don Cherry’s all time favorites, a man who changed the very way the game is played and what can expected from a defenseman – he’s Bobby Orr.

Orr celebrated his 65th birthday yesterday and was honored by Cherry on CBC in celebration.

Cherry said that he called No.4 yesterday morning to sing him Happy Birthday. When asked Orr’s reaction Cherry explained, “a lot people don’t realize that he’s the shyest guy in the world. If you see some more of his goals you’ll notice he always pushes the people away.”

Orr changed hockey forever when he joined the Boston Bruins in the 1966-67 season, scoring 45 goals in his first three years.

In the 1970-71 season he racked up 139 points, something unheard of for a defenseman at that time.

Before his knees finally gave out, Orr totaled up 915 points.

Here is a video tribute to the great Bobby Orr and we join with all the sports world in wishing him a happy birthday:
