College Football Power Rankings – Week 7
There were some big drops for big teams in the Power Rankings this week. Al Dannity sifts through the carnage as the BCS Championship race gets clearer.
1. Alabama (6-0, 3-0 SEC, 3-3 ATS)
Business as usual for Bama, a big win on the road and they were even nice enough to cover.
Last week: W 42-10 at Missouri.
Next up: Saturday at Tennessee.
2. Oregon (6-0, 3-0 Pac-12, 2-4 ATS)
A week off for the Ducks as they got to watch the carnage around them.
Last week: Idle.
Next up: Thursday at Arizona State.
3. Kansas State (6-0, 3-0 Big 12, 5-1 ATS)
The Wildcats gave everyone a scare on Saturday but they eventually took care of the Cyclones. Right now they are in pole position in the Big 12.
Last week: W 27-21 at Iowa State.
Next up: Saturday at West Virginia.
4. Notre Dame (6-0, 4-2 ATS)
Hi, I’m Al Dannity a self-confessed Notre Dame fan and the man who said the Fighting Irish would be doing well to sit at 3-5 after their first 8 games. On Saturday the Irish became bowl eligible and will, at worst, be 6-2 come the 8 game point. Sometimes I miss, really, really, badly.
Last week: W 20-13 vs. Stanford.
Next up: Saturday vs. BYU.
5. Florida (6-0, 4-0 SEC, 5-1 ATS)
The Gators can take control of the SEC East if they beat the Gamecocks in the Swamp on Saturday.
Last week: W 31-17 at Vanderbilt.
Next up: Saturday vs. South Carolina.
6. Ohio State (7-0, 3-0 Big Ten, 3-4 ATS)
The Buckeyes are not bowl eligible and are comfortably the class of their conference. They are basically the best hope for Ohio (the one without a State in its name) to bust the BCS.
Last week: W 52-49 at Indiana.
Next up: Saturday vs. Purdue.
7. Oregon State (5-0, 4-0 Pac-12, 4-1 ATS)
Back-up quarterback? No problem. The Beavers have no time for your notions of logic. They’re too busy winning.
Last week: W 42-24 at BYU.
Next up: Saturday vs. Utah.
8. Mississippi State (6-0, 3-0 SEC, 4-2 ATS)
The Bulldogs are moving into the meat of their schedule but they have one more cupcake before things get serious.
Last week: W 41-31 vs. Tennessee.
Next up: Saturday vs. Middle Tennessee State.
9. LSU (6-1, 3-1 SEC, 2-5 ATS)
And with one big day, the Tigers return to prominence. They need to stay perfect from here out.
Last week: W 23-21 vs. South Carolina.
Next up: Saturday at Texas A&M.
10. South Carolina (6-1, 4-1 SEC, 6-1 ATS)
The Gamecocks are down but not out. A win at Florida on Saturday would get South Carolina back in the BCS title conversation.
Last week: L 23-21 at LSU.
Next up: Saturday at Florida.
11. Florida State (5-1, 3-1 ACC, 3-4 ATS)
As expected the Noles made light work of BC. Now it’s time to see if they can take care of business against the Canes.
Last week: W 51-7 vs Boston College.
Next up: Saturday at Miami (Fl).
12. Oklahoma (4-1, 2-1 Big 12, 3-2 ATS)
The Sooners were just nasty on Saturday. The Longhorns were beaten out the gate as Oklahoma got back into the conference title race.
Last week: W 63-21 vs. Texas.
Next up: Saturday vs. Kansas.
13. Texas Tech (5-1, 2-1 Big 12, 5-1 ATS)
Here’s another notice of my idiocy. Last week I said the myth about the Red Raiders had been put to bed. Then they go and maul the Mountaineers.
Last week: W 49-14 vs. West Virginia.
Next up: Saturday at TCU.
14. West Virginia (5-1, 2-1 Big 12, 2-4 ATS)
That, gentlemen, was a whupping. Now all the Mountaineers need to do to get back on track is beat Kansas State…this Saturday.
Last week: L 49-14 at Texas Tech.
Next up: Saturday vs. Kansas State.
15. Georgia (5-1, 3-1 SEC, 2-4 ATS)
The Dawgs got to sit back and watch the madness this week. Now all they need to do to get back in the SEC East race is win at Kentucky.
Last week: Idle.
Next up: Saturday at Kentucky.
16. Ohio (7-0, 3-0 MAC, 3-4 ATS)
A trick play was needed to keep the Bobcats unbeaten this week. As long as they stay perfect, we’ll keep them in BCS contention.
Last week: W 34-28 vs. Akron.
Next up: October 27 at Miami (Oh).
17. Clemson (5-1, 2-1 ACC, 4-2 ATS)
An off-week for the Tigers as they prepare for a big home date with the Hokies on Saturday.
Last week: Idle.
Next up: Saturday vs. Virginia Tech.
18. Louisville (6-0, 1-0 Big East, 3-3 ATS)
The Cardinals stay perfect as the battle for Big East glory gathers momentum.
Last week: W 45-35 at Pitt.
Next up: Saturday vs. South Florida.
19. Rutgers (6-0, 3-0 Big East, 4-2 ATS)
The Scarlet Knights just keep getting it done. This Big East race is getting really exciting.
Last week: W 23-15 at Syracuse.
Next up: Saturday at Temple.
20. USC (5-1, 3-1 Pac-12, 1-5 ATS)
A shocking start meant the Trojans failed to cover but they rallied well.
Last week: W 24-14 at Washington.
Next up: Saturday vs. Colorado.
21. Texas A&M (5-1, 2-1 SEC, 3-3 ATS)
The Aggies ended the Bulldogs’ BCS hopes in a shootout on Saturday. They can’t expect to play shootouts like that every week.
Last week: W 59-57 at Louisiana Tech.
Next up: Saturday vs. LSU.
22. Cincinnati (5-0, 1-0 Big East, 3-2 ATS)
A win over a cupcake at the weekend move the Bearcats closer to bowl eligibility but they have BCS ambitions this year.
Last week: W 49-17 vs. Fordham.
Next up: Saturday at Toledo.
23. TCU (5-1, 2-1 Big 12, 3-3 ATS)
That is how you bounce back with authority. Big road win at Baylor and the Horned Frogs are still in the Big 12 race.
Last week: W 49-21 at Baylor.
Next up: Saturday vs. Texas Tech.
24. Stanford (4-2, 2-1 Pac-12, 3-3 ATS)
A loss in OT will always hurt but the Cardinal’s lack of potency on offence cost them dear on Saturday.
Last week: L 20-13 at Notre Dame.
Next up: Saturday at Cal.
25. Louisiana Tech (5-1, 0-0 WAC, 4-1-1 ATS)
The Bulldogs went down swinging. They likely won’t hang about long in these rankings but that was a courageous performance against the Aggies.
Last week: L 59-57 vs. Texas A&M.
Next up: Saturday vs. Idaho.
Next Five Out: Arizona State, Boise State, Northwestern, Texas, UCLA.
