The movie that renewed the world’s interest in the game of poker is getting another shot at boosting the industry all over again. Back in 1998, Matt Damon, John Malkovich and Edward Norton teamed up in Rounders, the John Dahl-directed movie about the underground world of high-stakes poker.
According to IMDb, Rounders 2 (2012) is currently categorized as in development – meaning a sequel is officially in the works. In 1998, the poker world was a very different place and the cult classic success of Rounders helped to bring poker into the mainstream. Now with players competing at all hours of the day and night at virtual tables in the online poker world, as well as the WSOP getting bigger and bigger each year, will Rounders 2 bring a boost the game all over again?
Yesterday, Miramax announced a partnership with The Weinstein Company which will see them merge to develop sequels to popular 1990s Miramax flicks. The first green lit projects are Bad Santa, Shakespeare in Love, and, of course, Rounders. Miramaz and The Weinstein Company are debating over Bridget Jones’s Diary (yes, it’s been that long), Copland, Swingers, Clerks, The Amityville Horror and From Dusk Till Dawn.
“We are very close to these films and the new management of Miramax also feels that we are in the best position to create sequels that are at once worthy and compelling in their own right,” said Harvey and Bob Weinstein in a joint statement.
