Typically, divorce is sad for everyone involved, especially the children. That was why we all tisked and shook our heads when Katie Holmes got pregnant and married Tom Cruise. The world knew it wasn’t going to last. It was only a matter of time before a girl from Ohio whose father is a divorce attorney, would realize that marrying a mega movie star Scientologist, wouldn’t make for a sustainable union.
Now, Katie is pulling the plug on her five-year union with Cruise, citing Tom’s religion and its affect on their daughter Suri, is the reason for the split.
The divorce, which reportedly blind-sided Tom, was gearing up to be a nasty one. However both parties holed up over the weekend to try and hash out a settlement.
Katie’s attorney, Jonathan Wolfe tells TMZ, “This case has been settled and the agreement has been signed. We are thrilled for Katie and her family and are excited to watch as she embarks on the next chapter of her life.”
In an attempt to avoid a bitter court battle, both Tom and Katie have called a temporary truce so that their lawyers can hammer out a divorce settlement. Thanks to an iron clad prenup, it’s likely that finances weren’t too much of an issue – but that the terms Tom was fighting for was that he would have meaningful and significant contact with Suri.
According to People, Suri will live with Katie in New York, giving her primary custody. However, Tom will still have “generous visitation rights.”
Wolfe added, “We thank Tom’s counsel for their professionalism and diligence that helped bring about this speedy resolution.”
