Kate Gosselin, with her standard peacock hair coiffed in a more subdued style and the camera lens in soft focus to give her a more warm and fuzzy feel, appeared on a TLC special, Kate: Her Story, with NBC’s Natalie Morales to tell her side of the “story.” It’s interesting to note that TLC promotes this as an “exclusive” interview. Doesn’t exclusive suggest that every news outlet in the country hasn’t already interviewed her?
In its heyday, most fans were on “Team Jon” as Kate emasculated her husband with incessant nagging and nit picking. However, since their high-profile split, Jon Gosselin has slowly morphed into the bad guy. The once soft-spoken, tired-looking seemingly congenial father of eight has become a ridiculous media whore, carousing with college girls, hanging around the likes of Michael Lohan and even hosting a press conference at a New York City Synagogue where he seeks spiritual advice from celebrity Rabbi Schmuley.
For her part in this mess, Kate is constantly on the press circuit, telling anyone who will listen what a good mother she is – often leaving her eight kids with nannies while she travels out of state to do so. Bottom line is these two Hollywood hungry parents are desperately trying to hang on to their 15 minutes of fame. With ratings for Jon and Kate Plus Eight dropping a staggering 70 percent over the last four months and Jon with his court action to keep them off the air, exploiting their colossal family is no longer doing it for them and now they have to “make news” in order to stay relevant. Thus, each releases statements trying to demonize the other in an all-out he-said-she-said brawl.
Now it is Kate’s turn to talk to the press… for the umpteenth time.
It’s hard for Kate to totally get away with playing the good parent card when her face is splashed across the front page of every tabloid. When Morales asks Kate about why she doesn’t let her children use the word “paparazzi,” Kate replies, “Because it’s not normal. A five-year-old should not know the word paparazzi. That’s just weird.”
Morales argues: “But yet they do. And why do they know the word paparazzi?
Kate says, “Not by my doing, I can tell you that.”
Morales: “Well, by having a reality TV show, that’s your doing.”
Not surprisingly, many tears are shed by Kate throughout the interview. Thanks to the media circus (not her fault, of course), Kate’s circle of trust is now a dilapidated handful of friends. She is cut off from many family members and although she is constantly surrounded by kids and people, she feels very alone.
“When you look around, and very close trusted people who would never cash you in, for lack of better words, and those people do that and people leave your house and tell completely different stories, you tend not to trust people,” she says.
One point that Kate scores out of this interview is coming off way saner than Jon. While Jon has totally gone off the deep-end, sleeping with different women, looting their joint bank account and even considering a reality show with Octomom, Kate does seem like the one who has it together. In the interview, while Kate owns up belittling her husband on national television, she also says that she still wakes up thinking that the phone will ring and “the old Jon” will be on the line.
So where can this media circus go next? Will the madness and the spotlight on the separating duo fade, or will there be ever more headline grabbing antics?
