What is most interesting about reality television competitions that showcase pseudo celebrities, former celebrities, or those celebrities whose careers are on life-support, are the varying degrees of ego, desperation and downright pettiness that go on behind-the-scenes. Case-in-point, reality TV star Kate Gosselin, who was thrust into the entertainment industry after giving birth to sextuplets, and went on to star in her own reality show while being followed by paparazzi during a tabloid-frenzied split from her husband, Jon.
Now, by all accounts, this former housewife has turned into a fame hungry she-beast. In fact, during her latest reality TV stint on the hit show Dancing with the Stars, judge Bruno Tonioli told Gosselin she had done a good job of channelling a “super bitch from hell,” which is perhaps a not-so-subtle way of critiquing her personality rather than her dance moves.
Now, Kate faces more drama. Jon Gosselin has filed for primary custody of their eight children based on the argument that she is spending more time chasing the Hollywood spotlight than raising their kids. Kate appeared on the Today show this morning to refute these claims (oh, and to peddle her latest book entitled, I Just Want You to Know). For her part, Kate says that although her work takes her away from her children, in her heart, she is in the kitchen baking cookies for her kids – metaphorically speaking, of course – because children love to be raised in abstract terms.
“I am a working mom and cameras are on me, so people catch me traveling or working,” Kate told Today’s Meredith Vieira. “I’ve got to work harder now than ever because I am a single mom and in my heart, I am always in my kitchen baking and cooking for my kids, and I will always be there. It is a struggle to be here. I would rather be at home with them. But I have to work. I have to provide for them. It’s a struggle every single mom goes through.”
Gosselin’s hectic “work” schedule is just the latest bad press fodder she has been dealing with. Pegged a “diva” by fellow castmembers on Dancing with the Stars, fans of her former show Jon & Kate Plus 8, know too well how uptight and Type-A Kate is.
Dancing with the Stars pro Maksim Chmerkovskiy has told the press that Kate’s sour attitude also is killing partner Tony Dovolani’s spirit and even scoffed that Dovolani will turn into a dumpy John Gosselin if he spends too much time with her.
