So what everyone thought would happen – is happening. Lawyers for James Holmes just told the court that they believe their client suffers from a mental illness and therefore they need more time to assess his condition before the enter a plea… but we’re pretty sure it will be not guilty by reason of insanity.
Reporters gathered in court today as Holmes’ legal team made the announcement during a hearing today and also argued that the judge in the case should unseal court documents that could reveal important details about the movie theatre shooting. His team also demanded that prosecutors and investigators turn over all documents related to the case, which they claim could shed some light on Holmes’ mental state at the time of the massacre.
The lawyer said, “We cannot begin to assess the nature and the depth of Mr. Holmes’ mental illness until we receive full disclosure of all the documents.”
Reportedly, Holmes had the same dazed expression that he has had in his first court appearance.
Defence attorney Daniel King made the revelation as he argued defence attorneys need more information from prosecutors and investigators.
The shooting during a midnight showing of The Dark Knight movie left 12 people dead and 58 injured. Holmes, a 24-year-old former PhD student at the University of Colorado, is charged with multiple counts of first-degree murder and attempted first-degree murder. He had sent a letter to his professor detailing these actions a week before the episode, but the letter sat unopened in a university mailroom.
