Conrad Murray to Stand Trial for Michael Jackson Death

As you can tell by the look on his face, it was a bad day for cardiologist Dr. Conrad Murray, the doctor accused of being so negligent, he caused the death of the King of Pop back in June of 2009.

This morning, the coroner who performed Michael Jackson’s autopsy testified that Jackson’s death has been classified as a homicide – meaning prosecutors have sufficient evidence to try Murray for manslaughter. Along with ordering Murray to stand trial on manslaughter charges, Judge Michael Pasto also stripped Murray of his state medical license.

During the six-day preliminary hearing of Murray’s role in Jackson’s death, the judge ruled that allowing Murray to keep his license “would constitute an imminent danger to public safety.”

Although the defence called chief of forensic medicine for the Los Angeles County cororner Christopher Rogers to testify that it could have been possible for Jackson’s death to have been ruled a suicide since the pop star could have administered propofol to himself, the plan backfired when Rogers dropped the bomb that he considered Jackson’s death a homicide. Rogers went on to tell the court that propofol had no place in Jackson’s home, saying, “If there was propofol there, the doctor should have been prepared for the effects.”

Rogers maintained that even if Jackson himself administered the lethal dose, Murray should be held responsible for his “substandard” treatment in using propofol to treat insomnia in a home setting without proper monitoring.

In his closing statement, Deputy District Attorney David Walgren said, “It was not Michael Jackson’s time to go. Michael Jackson is not here today because of the negligence and reckless acts of Dr. Murray.”

Murray is to return to court for arraignment January 25 and is expected to plead not guilty. If convicted, Murray faces a maximum of 4 years in prison. Think Murray will be headed to the big house?
