Amid the media frenzy that has erupted around Tiger Woods’ affairs, it is getting difficult to gauge who these people really are. Is Tiger Woods a filthy philanderer, a sex addict, or simply a man who made some mistakes and is now having every detail of his life examined and exaggerated? Is Elin Nordegren a wounded wife who trusted the wrong man, or is she a gold digger who just found out her job is in danger? As the plot thickens, Sports Interaction has opened up its sportsbook to include odds on whether or not Tiger Woods and Elin Nordegren will divorce before he wins another Major. Let’s break it down, shall we?
What is really at the heart of all these questions is whether Elin and Tiger are sincerely in love. Do they really want to stay together because they believe that they are the best mates possible for each other, or is Elin just trying to see what will be the most lucrative decision while Tiger begs for forgiveness for the sake of his “brand?” If Tiger does truly love Elin, why does he feel compelled to spread the love to porn stars, cocktail waitresses and reality TV tramps? Perhaps Tiger loves Elin but is hopelessly addicted to the thrill and secrecy of the affair, something that belongs to him that the world hasn’t been privy to (until now). Or perhaps it’s possible that Tiger’s marriage is merely a business deal and having women on the side is his way of coping with his loveless life.
Last week, news broke that the couple was renegotiating his prenup, apparently as a way for Tiger to make reparations with Elin. The renegotiation would see Elin receive an immediate $5 million to stay on the short-term and $55 million to stay for another two years. (Look out Romeo and Juliet, Tiger is purchasing an extended warranty on his marriage and setting a new precedent for romance through the ages.) More recently we’ve seen a ninth alleged affair revealed, this time with porn star Holly Sampson. With Elin having a seemingly endless supply of divorce ammunition, and now having moved out, we have to wonder how this could possibly end any other way except for divorce.
Unless Elin stays for the sake of the children, true affection for Tiger, or a big fat paycheck, divorce is inevitable.
